Why is it important for us to practice safe sex?

Sex is about pleasure, feeling, losing all inhibitions so, why think about taking precautions when we should be just enjoying the moment?

Here is why. If untreated, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) can cause physical pain, changes to your body, infertility or even death.

STDs happen when a virus affects your penis, vagina or mouth. There are a number of them, such as, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea or HIV. If you have had unprotected anal, vaginal or oral sex, you risk an infection.

Chlamydia can infect both women and men. It can cause permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive system, which can make it difficult or impossible to get pregnant. Chlamydia can also cause a potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy.

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection. The bacteria are mainly found in discharge from the penis and in vaginal fluid and can infect the cervix, the urethra or the rectum. It can be painful and cause serious health problems.

HIV infection spreads via body fluids such as semen, blood and vaginal secretion. The human immunodeficiency virus causes HIV infection and over time acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening infections and cancers to thrive.

Serious stuff. I don’t mean to kill the passion but unsafe sex may kill you, simple as that. Yet, we often play Russian roulette as if we were untouchable and those things only happened to other people. Time to wake up and smell the coffee, it can happen to any of us, if we don’t practice safe sex.

Safe sex is about taking precautions. For vaginal, anal and oral sex, you should use condoms. You have male and female condoms available. Use condoms on dildos and other penetrative sex toys too and, remember, condoms must be used from the start of sex to the very end.

Practicing safe sex means taking care of yourself and others. Be mature about STDs and don’t think you can tell if someone has a STD just by looking at them.

Safe sex can be sexy too.

Involve condoms in foreplay applying them with your mouth and hands, place some water based lubricant on them for extra sensitivity, you can use flavoured lubricants, coloured condoms and sex toys to liven up your safe sex experience.

You only live once, yes, but remember to stay alive.
